Course Description:

EMPLOYEE & ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT: This workshop is designed as an introduction to business writing and the process involved in composing letters, memos and e-mails. We will review common errors in grammar and spelling, as well as offer tips and resources for continuous improvement. Participants will have an opportunity to assess and practice writing skills. This course is appropriate for any employee at Texas A&M who communicates through letters, memos, emails or other written documents.

  • Identifying and practicing general conventions of effective business writing
  • Reviewing general guidelines
  • Getting to the point; paragraph revision
  • Writing for clarity
  • Discussing active voice vs. passive voice
  • Identifying common errors in writing and strategies to remember writing rules
    • Punctuation
    • Parallel construction
    • Tone
    • Avoiding redundancies
  • Reviewing and discussing professional email etiquette
